Description

The check that pays for the Endurance expedition

Shackleton (1874–1922), a junior officer in Scott’s National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–02, nearly reached the South Pole during an expedition of his own in 1909, in the process becoming a national hero. In 1915, during another expedition, his ship, Endurance, was crushed in the polar ice, and he and five others made a perilous journey of 1300 miles to bring relief for the crew. Knighted in 1909, Shackleton died at South Georgia during a fourth expedition in 1922. Bank check, 8.25 x 4.5, filled out in another hand and signed by Shackleton, “E. H. Shackleton,” payable to Messrs Scorey & Co. for £6-6-0, July 1, 1914. Red ink cancellation over signature, central vertical fold, and expected cancellation stamps, otherwise fine condition. Check is also stamped in the lower right, “The Shackleton Collection.” According to our consignor, this check was used by Shackleton to pay for his ill-fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914, a voyage in which his ship, the Endurance, was crushed and the crew marooned.
