LS signed as president-elect “J. A. Garfield,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, personal letterhead, January 24, 1881. Letter to T. R. Handy declining an invitation. In full: “Your favor of the 18th inst. came duly to hand. It would afford me pleasure to accept your kind invitation for the 20th, but engagements already made for that day will render it impossible. Regretting this but thanking you none the less for your courtesy.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, a brush to Garfield’s last name, as well as a few words of text, a couple small pinholes, and tape repairs to reverse of partially separated horizontal folds. This letter was written a mere six weeks prior to Garfield’s inauguration. Being the second rarest presidential signature while in office, a letter signed so close to his presidency is quite desirable. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
