Signers are Salk, whose letter reads in part: “Great progress has been made in that time and the future will unfold more than we can now imagine…There is a special quality to the time that follows a rich and meaningful professional life such as you have had”; Senator Arlen Specter; Congressman Joseph McDade; Pennsylvania Governor Dick Thornburgh; University of Wisconsin Professor Duard L. Walker; and Delbert E. Glanz. Accompanied by a 1960 TLS from John F. Enders, who shared the 1954 Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine for the cultivation of polio viruses in human tissue cells, regarding a visit by De Meio to the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston.
