TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, December 5, 1962. Letter to Mrs. Marshall Smith. In full: “It was indeed a pleasure to receive your recent letter. Thank you so very much for the congratulations. I am so glad that you liked ‘Travels With Charley.’ As for the state of Montana, I found the country to be one of indescribable beauty. Thank you again for taking the time to write.” Mild toning to edges, easily matted out, with a couple of light stains above the date, otherwise fine condition.
Travels with Charley: In Search of America was Steinbeck’s humorous travelogue documenting a 1960 trip he took with his French poodle, Charley, across the United States in a specially made camper. Their journey began in in Long Island, New York roughly following the outer border of the country from Maine to the Pacific Northwest, into his native Salinas Valley in California, across Texas and through the Deep South, and then back to New York—a trip encompassing nearly 10,000 miles. Witnessed by this correspondence, Big Sky Country was among his many stops. Taken by the “indescribable beauty” identified on this page, Steinbeck further praised the land in his 1962 book: ‘I’m in love with Montana.’ “For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even some affection. But with Montana it is love.” Sincere flattery as expressed by the great author toward the great state. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
