Publisher and author (1817–1881). Beginning in 1845 as Ticknor, Reed and Fields and later as just Ticknor and Fields, his firm published the original works of many of the prominent American authors and poets of the nineteenth century including: Emerson, Hawthorne, Holmes, Longfellow, Lowell, Stowe, Thoreau, and Whittier. Thirty items: Nine ALSs, dating from the 1840s to the 1870s, to various recipients, including a handwritten poem entitled ‘An Invitation’ and initialed “J.T.F.” at its conclusion. Accompanied by nineteen ALSs from his second wife, Annie Adams Fields, to a Mr. Alden, a transcription copy of a letter from English author Thomas de Quincey to Fields, and a written account of de Quincey’s last hours in an unknown hand.
