Samuel Gridley Howe

Physician, abolitionist, and advocate of the blind (1801–1876) as well as the husband of Julia Ward Howe. Four ALSs, one dated 1840 on Institution for the Blind stationery and three undated, with two addressed to a Miss Putnam. One letter reads, in part: “The truth is I have never taken any pains with my compositions—feeling that the mediocrity I might attain by an effort would not be worth that effort.” In overall very good condition, with a few tiny tears, intersecting folds, expected handling wear, and an even shade of toning.
