Description

Optional dress, a yellow submarine, and John Lennon

Original vintage ticket to the World Gala Premiere of Yellow Submarine, 6.5 x 5.75, held at the London Pavilion on July 17, 1968, signed on the reverse in black ink by Lennon. The lower right of the ticket states that the dress for the evening is “optional (very).” In very good condition, with a central vertical fold, mounting remnants to reverse, as well as some light soiling and a surface tear above Lennon’s signature (just touching the “h” in “John”). Accompanied by an original two-page program from the event, which is also in very good condition, with intersecting folds.

This ticket and accompanying program are certainly sights to be seen, with the carefully (and cartoonishly) rendered Fab Four prominently displayed. Of course, the premiere of this colorful animated feature at the London theater was something to see, too, with the presence of all four Beatles at the venue causing Beatlemania to rage outside. Observers able to see clearly enough were perhaps more surprised by who accompanied the band to the event...and who did not. Paul McCartney’s five-year companion, Jane Asher, was nowhere to found; nor was Lennon’s once-inseparable wife, Cynthia. In her place that evening—Yoko Ono. For one fortunate fan, the evening included not only yellow submarines and Blue Meanies, but Lennon’s desirable signature, as well. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
