Brazilian aviator who built a cylindrical balloon with a gasoline engine and made the first flight from St. Cloud, around the Eiffel Tower and back. Produced “Grasshopper” monoplanes, which were forerunners of the modern plane. Original vintage signed pencil sketch of Santos-Dumont in profile, done in another hand, on an off-white 3.25 x 4.5 sheet affixed to a slightly larger trimmed album page, signed in fountain pen, “Souvenir de Santos Dumont, Paris–19th 12-1903.” Scattered light toning and soiling from adhesive on reverse, otherwise fine condition.
