Iconic American cartoonist (born 1943) who created the classic underground “comix” Zap and Snatch, featuring the overtly sexual escapades of Mr. Natural, the grotesquely voluptuous Angelfood McSpade, and many others. Unsigned typed letter, one page, 8.5 x 11, no date. Letter written to Woody Gelman, reads in part: “Zap Comix are all sold out, but the next issue will be out soon…Should be good…there are two other guys in it besides me…one is a local psychedelic poster artist…got a great letter from Bob Stewart, with a long critique of Zap. Tell him I really learned something from it. Tell him the ‘Adults Only’ bit was not my idea but the printers, who was afraid we’d get in trouble if the comix got in the hands of some well-meaning grade-school principle [sic]…Somebody gave me this typewriter yesterday. Incredible!” Also present is the original mailing envelope, addressed in Crumb’s hand to Gelman in New York, and signed in the top left as part of the return address, “Crumb,” with a clipped picture of an old movie projector affixed to left edge, with Crumb adding several rows of diagonal lines coming from the projector. In very good condition, with several tears to left edge, folds, neither of which affect legibility, scattered creases and toning, and a rusty paperclip mark. Envelope has several vertical creases, paper loss to back and a staple hole. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
