That reposing special trust and confidence in the Patriotism, Valor, Fidelity, and Abilities of John Gilbert, I do appoint him Assistant Surgeon of Volunteers, with the rank of Captain.” Also signed by Secretary of State Elihu Root. Matted and framed to an overall size of 23.5 x 19.75. Intersecting folds, uniform toning with two heavier strips lightly affecting the signature and countersignature, scattered paper loss along the top edge, and the signature quite faded but legible, otherwise very good condition.
