English physicist, mathematician, and astronomer (1643–1727), widely regarded as the most influential figure in the history of science, whose ideas and discoveries, including calculus, the laws of gravitation and motion, and observations on the nature of light and optics, earned him a place among the most profound geniuses in the history of mankind. Partial manuscript DS, signed “Is. Newton,” one page, 10.25 x 2.75, no date but noted in pencil in another hand as 1718. Partial financial registry page apparently listing payments made by or to several men and signed in the left column by each next to their respective name and amount. Newton has signed "Is. Newton" in acknowledgment of £1000. Document has been folded so that Newton’s signature is prominently displayed, then matted with an engraved portrait of Newton, to an overall size of 7.25 x 11.5. In very good condition, with toning over first portion of signature, as well as a couple stray ink marks.
This substantial sum—certainly by 1718 standards—was collected by the famed physicist just as Newtonian science was becoming increasingly accepted. As a result, Newton was establishing his high regard as an esteemed natural philosopher. During the final years of his life, which he was entering here, Newton spent time revising his major works, polishing his studies of ancient history, and defending himself against critics. Newton has been regarded for almost 300 years as the founding father of modern physical science, with his achievements in experimental investigation being as innovative as those in mathematical research. A rare signature of one of the world’s most influential figures in receipt of a very hefty payment! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
