Benedict’s pontificate was dominated by World War I, which he termed ‘the suicide of Europe,’ and its turbulent aftermath. Maintaining strict neutrality, he advanced several peace proposals and did much to aid war victims. Unsigned internal letter, in Italian, one page, 6.75 x 9, no date, but between 1914-1919, on gold embossed letterhead.
