Description

In the wake of World War I, Wilson signs a Signal Corps photo from the 1919 Paris Peace Conference

Vintage sepia matte-finish 9.75 x 12 US Army Signal Corps photo of Wilson posing with another man, signed in fountain pen. In another hand, in pencil on the reverse, is written, “Capt. John T. Nightingale, Tennis & Racquet Club, Boston, Mass.” In fine condition, with trimmed edges, a small tear at the right edge, and moderate contrast to the somewhat faded signature, though still legible.

Prior to Wilson's arrival, no sitting US president had ever visited Europe. Wilson, however, felt it was his duty and obligation to the people of the world to be a prominent figure at the Paris Peace Conference. Accompanying him on the journey was Captain Nightingale, a prominent figure in Boston society, who was assigned as Wilson’s personal baggage handler and train scheduler during the negotiations from December 1918 through July 1919. Although Nightingale had limited interaction with Wilson, the chief executive’s very presence overseas helped shape early 20th century history. High hopes and expectations were placed on him to deliver what he had promised for the post-war era. In doing so, Wilson ultimately began to lead the foreign policy of the United States toward interventionism. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
