Description

Shortest reigning champion ever

Boxer who held the world title for the shortest period of time. The referee, Harry Ertle, called the 1924 fight, Stribling vs. McTigue, a draw. When the crowd grew ugly, Ertle, thinking he might be in danger, gave the decision to Stribling. Then, when he was on a train and safely on his way out of Georgia, Ertle announced that McTigue had won the fight. Stribling was 19 years old at the time. Rare vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo, signed in fountain pen, “Sincerely, W. L. Stribling, Jr.” In good condition, with heavy rippling and overall irregularity to emulsion (apparently from exposure to moisture), staining to left side, light crazing to portions of emulsion, silvering to darker areas of image, small tear to bottom edge, a bit of trivial surface loss to left border, and mounting remnants to reverse. The signature remains quite bold. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
