Author of Frankenstein. This truly remarkable gothic horror was written as the result of a bet between herself, her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and several of their friends as to who could write the most disturbing tale of terror; the group who participated in the contest included notables such as Lord Byron, Leigh Hunt, Edward Trelawney and Edward Williams. Mary, the unmitigated winner, was only nineteen at the time. Rare ink signature and sentiment on an off-white 2.25 x 2.5 slip evidently clipped from the closing of a letter, “Adieu love, thine, Mary Shelley, Wednesday.” In very good condition, with light wrinkling and creasing, slightly curved right edge, and a small bit of paper loss to top edge above the word "love." One of the most elusive and desirable of nineteenth-century literary figures. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
