ALS, one page, 6.75 x 9.25, personal letterhead, March 7, 1972. Letter to Greek harpsichordist Lina Lalandi. In full: “I am honored beyond measure at your inviting me to become president of the English Bach Festival. I accept in humble awareness of the great men who have preceded me in this position; and while I know I can never rise to their stature I do hope to come as near to the standards they set as I possibly can.” In fine condition, with a bit of trivial soiling and a couple of minor creases. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed by Bernstein, who has signed the reverse as part of his return address. Indeed Bernstein, as third president of this society, was in good company, having followed Albert Schweitzer and Igor Stravinsky. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
