Esteemed American painter (1917–2009) best known for his distinctively realist scenes of New England and his native Pennsylvania. He attracted worldwide attention in 1986 with the revelation of his “Helga” series, executed over the period of more than a decade and hitherto unknown. The furor surrounding the paintings was such that, in a rare occurrence for the art world, the story made the cover of Time and Newsweek magazines in the same week.
