Description

Mountbatten extends an invitation for visiting military dignitaries

British admiral and statesman (born 1900), uncle of Prince Philip, and Supreme Allied Commander in Southeast Asia during World War II, who was killed by an IRA bomb in 1979. TLS signed “Dickie,” one page, 8.25 x 11.75, Chief of the Defence Staff letterhead, November 13, 1962. Letter marked at the top “restricted,” in which Mountbatten extends an invitation to a United States counterpart. In part: “As you will know, the Commandant and two members of the Directing Staff of our Joint Services Staff College visited the United States Staff Colleges for five days during May/June 1962 at the invitation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. They saw the National War College, the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Air Force War College, and the Air Force Staff College. Great value was gained from the visit. Not only did our team get a clear insight into the organisation [sic] and methods of instruction used in your Colleges, but very friendly relations were established and these we are anxious to preserve. I write now to invite the Commandant and two members of the Directing Staff of the United States Armed Forces Staff College to visit our Joint Services Staff College.” Pencil notation above signature, and pencil office notation at top, and punch and staple holes along top edge, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a one page outline for the proposed visit. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
