LS signed “J. C. Fremont, Maj. Gen Comdg” one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, Head-Quarters, Mountain Department letterhead, April 29, 1862. Fremont writes from Wheeling to Brigadier General Thomas. In part: “In reply to your letter of the 25th instant respecting Major Fornet, I have to say that I have no records now at hand which will enable me to fix the date of his appointment. It was my intention to assign him to the command of a battalion to be formed from several pioneer companies under my command in the Western Department. Pending the organization of this battalion Major Fornet was sent on official business to New York. So far as he had any opportunity to exhibit his capacities he proved himself to be a thoroughly reliable, capable and efficient officer.” Scattered creasing and light toning along folds, otherwise fine condition.
