Description

“The United States are as much indebted to General Crowder as to any one man for our success in the Great War”

Vintage matte-finish 9.75 x 14 Harris and Ewing photo, signed and inscribed “For my dear friend General E. H. Crowder–whom I first came to know as Military Secretary of the Military Governor of the Philippines Government and whose abilities and great usefulness I came to know and admire for many years. I think the people of the United States are as much indebted to General Crowder as to any one man for our success in the Great War and our organization of our great army. He has not been properly rewarded. Wm. H. Taft, Dec. 6th, 1927.” In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling to lower border, some light silvering to edges of image, and a few light edge creases. Crowder is most noted for implementing and administering the United States Selective Service Act of 1917—the universal military draft—during World War I, an act which drafted hundreds of thousands of American men into military service during World War I. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
