Description

A fully engaged illustrator regrets that “this coming autumn I fear is out of the question” to meet a desired deadline

Beautifully penned ALS, one page, 7.75 x 10.25, January 27, 1901, to Mr. Russell. In full: “Your letter of Jan. 22nd received. I should like to make pictures for another book very much, but I [am] afraid it could not be for this coming autumn because I have work in hand upon which I shall be engaged until at least August. I could do it for the autumn of 1902 but this coming autumn I fear is out of the question. I have thought over 110 books as yet, but would like you to suggest some too. I might be able to make you a picture for your portfolio, if you let me know how much time you can allow me. As to the color, do you know by what process it would be reproduced? I do hope I could find time to do it. And what is the size?” Intersecting folds, one passing through the first letter of his signature, light wrinkling, two date stamps, and show-through at upper left corner from mounting residue on the back, otherwise fine condition.

The year may have just been starting, but Parrish was correct in his assessment that 1901 was going to be a busy one. It was during this period that he illustrated John Milton’s L’Allegro for The Century Magazine, in the process earning overwhelming praise. Supporters maintained that such contributions to the periodical revealed a never-before-seen aspect of his talents, with his delicate artistic touch properly employed to enhance poems and short stories. Such assignments opened the door to more opportunities, most notably travels to Arizona to paint a series of illustrations for an article on the Southwest. Once again, this increased exposure led to an even greater demand on his time, leading one to contemplate whether Mr. Russell and Parrish were ever able to do business together! An extremely attractive letter for display. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
