Description

Stan the Man writes his manager on baseball and business

Archive consisting of five ALSs, all signed “Stan,” and one page of handwritten notes, all dating from circa 1950. All the letters are written to his business manager Fred Corcora. Excerpts from the letters follow:

June 5, 1950, “Here are copies of contract received from Joe De Guglielmo…I’m having hitting trouble but hope to break loose any day.” On May 31, 1950, Musial’s batting average was leading the major league with a .415. By the date of this letter, Musial’s batting average had fallen to .393. Still wearing a brace from a knee injury in April, Musial injured his hand in June.

October 24, [1949], “Enclosed are the copies [not included] and signatures of the sock contract, which I think is fine - / After hearing from Frick about the Beer deal, I wrote him and sent the check along for charity. He said he wasn’t concerned about the check and sent it back…Sorry Ted [Williams] and I couldn’t take the batting titles but I know its [sic] mine in ’50-.”

February 26, 1950, “Enclosed are signed contracts [not included] for Chesterfield, Gelatin…I didn’t sign the Bowman Gun…the Wheaties contract should be due soon and possibly Winthrop Shoes…We’re off to a fine start and should have a good year all the way around….”

Handwritten notes on Musial’s printed restaurant stationery, Stan Musial & Biggie’s Steak House, St. Louis, Missouri. Musial pens the names of seven companies, most likely potential or actual endorsement agreements, and the amounts associated with his endorsement. “Rawlings 3,000.00 / Palm Beach 2500.00 / Wheaties 2,000.00 / Chesterfield 1500.00 / Beech Nut 1,000.00 / Colgate 750.00 / Hood Rubber 300.00.”

In fine overall condition, with some scattered light toning and soiling. RRAuction COA.
