Description

“The war seems to me more a dream than a reality”

Agriculturalist (1814-1909) who served as governor of Vermont during the Civil War. ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7.25, December 22, 1897. The now-retired governor responds to an autograph request and reflects on the Civil War. In full: “My son, Judge Holbrook, write me that Judge Hinsdale requested him to forward my signature for your collection of autographs. I now cheerfully send it to you, with a little sentiment. There is but one other of the War Governors surviving with me, Gov. Sprague of Rhode Island. We were the two youngest of the War Governors in office in 1861. The war seems to me more a dream than a reality, notwithstand its heavy labors and sleepless anxieties for those who bore its responsibilities.” In fine condition, with uniform overall toning.
