Description

The Declaration’s Pennsylvania delegate who also signed the Constitution arranges for a real estate bidder

ALS signed “Geo Clymer,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.5 x 8, January 9, 1789. Letter to Joseph Shippen regarding a real estate matter. In part: “Mr. Yates writes me that Col. Ross your Sheriff proposes to advertise the sale of Peter Wayland’s estate…taken in execution to satisfy W. Q. Meredith’s mortgage upon it. And that it would be proper I should get some person to bid on behalf of Mr. M’s executors less the place should go off at an under value… As the sale will be in the borough I can with more freedom request you to undertake this business for us—and you will be pleased to buy in for the executors in case no other bidder should go high enough to save the debt, which this sale gives us the only chance of Mr. Yates ‘saying it as’ of Wayland’s remaining property.”

Second integral page bears an address panel in another hand to Shippen. In very good condition, with several repairs to tears and separations, scattered creasing and soiling, second page inlaid to a slightly larger sheet, and intersecting folds. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
