Description

The legendary songwriting duo sign on the set of their one and only Top of the Pops appearance

Original vintage camera script sheet for the June 16, 1966, Top of the Pops program, 8.25 x 13, signed on the reverse in red ballpoint, “John Lennon” and “Paul McCartney.” The front of the sheet lists the featured acts on the show, including The Beatles, The Kinks, Herman’s Hermits, and Frank Sinatra, and the show’s host Peter Murray. Lower portion lists the crew members and shooting schedule for the day. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one horizontal fold lightly affecting a couple letters of each signature, paper loss and short tear to top edge (far from writing), and some scattered light creasing and soiling.

The British equivalent of American Bandstand, Top of the Pops had been airing for two years before the Beatles made their first live appearance on the music show. The Fab Four had made pre-recorded appearances, but the June 16 marked the first time that John, Paul, George, and Ringo would treat the studio to a live performance—the newly released “Paperback Writer” and its B-side, “Rain.” Appearing as the show’s final act that night, this episode holds the distinction of being the Beatles’ second-to-last live television appearance as a group. Pre-certified Roger Epperson/REAL and RRAuction COA.
