Description

Following Shays’ Rebellion, a Massachusetts cavalry man is appointed captain in the new militia

Partly-printed DS, one page of George II watermarked paper, 16 x 12.75, April 16, 1792. Governor Hancock appoints Ezra Sawyer “Captain of a Company of Cavalry in the Seventh Division of Militia of this Commonwealth, comprehending the County of Worcester – By Virtue of the Power vested in me, I do by these Presents, (reposing special Trust and Confidence in your Loyalty, Courage and good Conduct) Commission you accordingly.” Nicely signed in the left border by Hancock, and countersigned by John Avery. In very good condition, with professional repairs to separations of intersecting folds on reverse, a vertical crease through a single letter of signature, scattered light toning and foxing, and a bit of scattered light paper loss along fold junctions. The large paper seal remains crisp and intact, and Hancock’s signature is prominent.

Sawyer was the son of a Revolutionary War commander who briefly lived in New York State before returning to the family homestead in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was sometime following his return in which he received the offered appointment from Hancock, who would die just over a year later while serving as Massachusetts governor. Sawyer served in the War of 1812, where he and his regiment partook in the defense of Boston during a fall 1814 battle. An always desirable Hancock appointment. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
