Description

William H. Seward

American statesman (1801–1872) who served as secretary of state in the Lincoln administration and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. His greatest political achievement was the purchase of Alaska from Russia, derided by contemporary skeptics as “Seward’s Folly.” Partly-printed DS, one page, 15 x 10, November 12, 1840. Seward appoints John Cummings “Lieut. Colonel in the 28 Regiment of Artillery of our said State.” Signed at the conclusion by Seward, and countersigned by Adjutant-general Rufus King. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one running along bottom of signature, mild toning, and a few edge tears. RRAuction COA.
