During the Civil War he served first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 8th United States Regular Infantry, then as Colonel of the 3rd United States Regular Infantry before being placed in charge of all Union prisoner of war camps and hospitals. War-dated printed General Order No. 163, one page, 4 x 6.75, dated October 22, 1862, signed at the conclusion by Hoffman, “W. Hoffman, Col. 3 Infy, Com.” Order directs officers who release prisoners of war on parole to provide rolls to the Adjutant General.” In fine condition, with trimmed left edge, a vertical fold through a single letter of signature, and a mild shade of toning.
