Special order issued by Butler for the National Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers reads in part: “The quarters…occupied by the Deputy Governor at the Northwestern Branch are assigned…to Major John Cassels…The Services of the Matron…in view of the small number of inmates, may be dispersed with…No more than $25 per month will be allowed to any inmate who shall act as clerk for the Treasurer.” Accompanied by an original unsigned carte-de-visite of Butler in uniform.
