ANS signed “FDR,” one page, 8.5 x 11, no date. Note is written in the large lower border of the first page of a two-page typed document regarding the budget for the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation, dated May 1929. Roosevelt writes: “O.K. Except – eliminate Fund for study of Restorative Treatment $250,000 – and add proviso that $100,000 may be taken from Patients Aid Fund or Maintenance Fund to add to building.” In very good condition, with expected folds, mild toning, and light chipping to edges. Paralyzed from the waist down, Roosevelt had little success in regaining use of his lower body until, on a friend’s recommendation, he visited the natural springs at Warm Springs, Georgia, in 1924. The natural springs, flowing at 88§ Fahrenheit, had long been recognized for their curative properties by Native Americans, and a Victorian era resort had been built there. Roosevelt visited Warm Springs 41 times, and in 1927 he personally funded the creation of the Georgia Warm Springs Institute on the site, dedicated to the rehabilitation of polio victims.
