Letter to a friend in New York, written while travelling through Europe. In part: “We have seen a great deal (paintings)…The great Rembrandt's, Rubin’s, Velasquez’s, & Breughels…are breathtaking. They make one feel humble—and yet they inspire. But wherever we went it was Rembrandt who stood out like a shining light.
