Description

In June 1969, weeks before its historic launch, Apollo 11’s commander reacts to the poem “An Astronaut Earth-Gazing”

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, NASA letterhead, stamp-dated June 9, 1969. Letter of thanks to a New Jersey woman who had sent Armstrong an original poem. In full: “Thank you very much for sending me a copy of your poem, ‘An Astronaut Earth-Gazing.’ Your thoughtfulness in sharing this with me is appreciated and I trust your interest in our activities will continue as the Apollo program progresses.” Accompanied by the aforementioned poem, “An Astronaut Earth-Gazing”, by Gaye Praml. Poem reads:

“Twinkle, twinkle little Earth How I wonder what’s the worth of travelling to this far-off climb of craters, dust and endless time True, I can fly quite weightlessly, but there’s nothing on the moon to see! Is there a creature hiding in a crevice whom I might challenge to a game of tennis? Old moon, please forgive this lonely poem but would you mind if I went home?”

In fine condition. Pre-certified Scott Cornish and RRAuction COA.
