Description

Norwegian ethnographer and adventurer (1914–2002) best known for the Kon-Tiki expedition, during which he tested the theory of early contact between South America and Polynesia by successfully sailing a raft across the Pacific Ocean. Unsigned handwritten manuscript page from Heyerdahl’s The Maldive Mystery, in pencil, one 8.25 x 11.75 lined off-white page. Manuscript reads in part: “Before an island was discovered and its position known, nobody could guess at what would be the nearest land from where to set course. Winds and currents set the course of accidental drifts, and the sun and the stars guided those who set sail with a premeditated plan.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Accompanied by a 1985 TLS from Heyerdahl’s secretary, stating Heyerdahl was on an expedition to Polynesia, but she was enclosing a page from his manuscript. In fine condition, with bisecting folds to manuscript, as well as uniform toning. RRAuction COA.
