Description

In the year of his return to the ring, Liston scores near-perfect vision

DS, one page, 8.5 x 12, June 28, 1967. California State Athletic Commission eye examination report for the then-32 year old Liston, showing he has 20/25 vision in both eyes and no sign of any eye diseases. Signed at the bottom in blue ballpoint by both Liston and the examining physician. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, scattered creasing, and two punch holes to top edge.

After being knocked to the ground by what was barely a tap by Muhammad Ali in a 1965 bout—that now-legendary “phantom punch”—Liston stepped away from life as a pugilist, returning to the ring a year later and recording four victorious bouts in Sweden in 1967. Looking back to that ‘65 affair with Ali, one might assume that he never saw the Champ’s punching coming, even though his eyesight, as evidenced by this document, was pretty close to perfect. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
