Golf’s first great American hero who, at the 1913 US Open at the Country Club, changed the perceptions of an entire sport with a stunning triumph that captured the imagination of sports fans across the globe…and swept away the notion that golf was a stuffy game for rich old men. Vintage fountain pen signature, “Francis Ouimet, 10/2/36,” on a 5.5 x 2.75 blue card from the Albert R. Chestnut collection. Attached to a slightly larger heavy gray card, with light toning to right edge, otherwise fine condition. From his Pennsylvania home, Chestnut, a printer by profession, began collecting autographs in 1935. He sent these personally-printed cards to over a thousand celebrities and received favorable replies from the vast majority, finally retiring from collecting to raise his family when postage increased from 2¢ per card!
