Description

Washington signature with direct association to the Society of the Cincinnati

Splendid large ink signature and postscript, “Go: Washington, P.S. Please to acknowledge the receipt of this letter,” on an off-white 6.5 x 2.75 slip, clipped from the closing of a larger piece. Notation along bottom, in another hand, reads, “Mount Vernon Va., Dec 28th 1783.” Double matted and framed to an overall size of 15.5 x 18.5. In very good condition, with a central vertical fold slightly affecting opening stroke of signature, scattered light foxing and soiling, and several circular stains.

While it is clear that this signature was trimmed from a larger letter, research reveals that is was undoubtedly removed from a letter to one of the state presidents of the Society of the Cincinnati, as it is identical in wording and date to an intact example of the postscript on the letter that was sent to Rhode Island. The Society of the Cincinnati, an historic organization simultaneously founded in 1783 in both America and France, sought to preserve the ideals of the Revolutionary War. The group also tried to ensure that the newly formed US government, and the well-established leadership of France, honored pledges the respective governments had made to officers who fought in the war. Interestingly, the date of December 28, was five days after Washington had resigned as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. An intriguing signature with terrific association, handsomely framed and ready for display. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
