Welles seeks “knowledge of military tactics” from the founder of Norwich University

Secretary of the Navy under Lincoln and Johnson (1802–1878). LS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, May 10, 1824. Welles writes to Captain Alden Partridge, former superintendent of West Point and founder of Norwich University, in part, “Having a desire to acquire some knowledge of military tactics…I have been recommended to your school as affording the best rules of education, for both the soldier & citizen.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered toning and soiling, old tape repairs to the reverse, and pencil notations on the front.
