Description

Not resting on his bottom, Cleveland promptly sends thanks for “a warm and bountiful supply of underwear”

ALS, one page both sides, 4.5 x 7, April 25, 1903. Letter of thanks to C. H. Kavanaugh. In part: “I was reminded a few days ago of your continued very good kindship and thoughtfulness by the receipt of a warm and bountiful supply of underwear…I feel abundantly furnished for a long time to come, with protection against all sorts of weather.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Cleveland’s hand. In fine condition, with some light show-through from writing on reverse and a light shade of toning.

A true necessity, Cleveland seems to have greatly appreciated the abundance of drawers provided to him. The knit fabrics of the day may not have held the same designer allure that 21st century undergarments possess—so long as a shirt was not too short or underpants not too long, everyone was happy—the two-time former Chief Executive nonetheless looked forward to, as he notes here, “protection against all sorts of weather” thanks to his gift. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
