Pope, born Giacomo della Chiesa (1854–1922), who reigned from 1914 until his death. Benedict’s pontificate was dominated by World War I, which he termed “the suicide of Europe,” and its turbulent aftermath. Maintaining strict neutrality, he advanced several peace proposals and did much to aid war victims. ALS in Italian, signed “+ Giacomo Archivescovo di Bologna,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, Archivescovato di Bologna letterhead, August 4, 1912. Untranslated letter written as Archbishop of Bologna.
