Declaration of Independence: Stephen Hopkins

Manuscript DS, signed “Step Hopkins Govn,” one page, 4 x 6.25, September 14, 1755. A pay order in the amount of over four pounds nineteen shillings issued to Thomas Vernon, postmaster at Newport, for the postage of letters. A rusty paperclip mark to top edge, a light overall shade of toning, and light show-through from docketing on reverse, otherwise fine condition. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell places Hopkins’s autograph material into the “rare” category among the Signers. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
