Wonderful vintage matte-finish 11 x 13 photo of Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover riding in the back of a convertible, undoubtedly on the presidential inauguration day, matted to an overall size of 15.5 x 19.5 and beautifully signed on the mat in fountain pen by Roosevelt. Framed to an overall size of 18 x 22. In fine condition, with some scattered light toning to mat.
The first inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt as the 32nd President of the United States was held on Saturday, March 4, 1933, in the wake of FDR’s landslide victory over then-president Herbert Hoover in the 1932 presidential election. This image had to have been captured as the two men journeyed together for the ceremonial passing of the torch between the two administrations. With the nation in the grips of the Great Depression, the newly elected president's inaugural speech was eagerly awaited. FDR did not disappoint, telling tens of millions of Americans that he would respond to the crisis, and uttering the immortal phrase that “the only thing we have to fear…is fear itself.” An intimate photographic peek at a pivotal moment in the history of our nation.
