Important German philosopher (1889–1976) whose Being and Time was a fundamental text in the development of existentialism. ALS in German, one page, horizontally and vertically lightly-lined both sides, 6 x 8.25, August 2, 1947. Unpublished letter to his student Magda Stomps, a long-time friend of Heidegger and his wife Elfriede. In part: “I recently was visited by a very kind young Dutch psychiatrist, currently working in Paris; he brought me greetings from Prof. van der Horst and Dr. v. d. Hoop. The literature about ‘Existentialism’ is not up to that which was attempted at Freiburg in former times in terms of philosophical work. Mr. Schadewaldt’s report is accurate only insofar was I do still work up here, under the circumstances as they are today. Of my writings, all I still possess is my working copy of each. Reprinting cannot even be thought of at the present. If anything is reprinted, you shall gladly have a copy. Dr. Fink, Husserl’s last assistant, now teaches at Freiburg, and Max Müller, whom you probably remember from the Seminar, has the Chair of Catholic Philosophy. Prof. Bauch reads with great spirit and effect. Prof. Dragendorff has died. Prof. Szilasi, who lives in Switzerland, may start to teach here as well. – Both our sons have been in Russian imprisonment for 2 1/2 years. Upper Silesian refugees have been put up in our Freiburg house (a friend from college days with his wife); the wife of our eldest son, who owns the house since 1942, lives there too. The old Freiburg has disappeared altogether.” The Dutch philosopher Magda A. H. Stomps, who specialized in the phenomenology of religion, earned her doctorate in 1935 under Heidegger with a thesis on “The Anthropology of Martin Luther,” describing the reformer’s anthropology within the categories of existential philosophy. In 1938 she published two Dutch articles about Heidegger and the philosophy of religion: “De philosophie van Martin Heidegger” and “Heideggers verhandeling over de dood en de theologie.” She later taught at Zutphen in Gelderland. After World War II, she lived in Stolberg (Harz) and in Cologne before moving to Argentina in 1952 (probably due to the intermediation of Hans-Georg Gadamer), joining Heidegger’s student Carlos Astrada at the University of Buenos Aires.
