Description

Buchanan sends a glowing letter of recommendation

LS as president, one page, 8.25 x 10.25, July 17, 1847. Letter of recommendation to General Jesup of the United States Army. In full: “Understanding that my friend James May of Pittsburg has some application pending before you of the nature of which I am ignorant, I cannot deny myself the pleasure of informing you that he is a gentleman of the highest respectability & moral worth. You will never have any trouble in getting him to perform whatever he may promise. You will not, my dear Sir, I feel confident consider this an interference on my part with the high duties of your office. It is written merely to communicate my knowledge of the character of a most worthy man.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a few creases, light show-through from docketing on reverse, and a couple small tape repairs on reverse of slight separations. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
