Description

Stowe inscribes Uncle Tom’s Cabin “for young DeWitt Clinton”

Signed book: Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Later printing. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1894. Hardcover with slipcase, 5.25 x 8, 500 pages. Signed and inscribed on the second free end page, “For young DeWitt Clinton, from his friend, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Dec. 29, 1894, Hartford, Conn.” There is a Charles William Clinton bookplate affixed to inside front cover, who was the father of DeWitt Clinton, who died in 1896. In very good condition, with the first two end pages (including the signed page) detached, cracked front hinge, scattered cover wear and soiling, chipping and a light central vertical fold to signed page, some tears, and some light damp staining primarily to the bottoms of pages (the first several dozen pages also show light pink staining within the damp stains, apparently the result of unobtrusive pigment within the front cover). The spine is moderately sunned with wear to its tips. Outstanding association in a notable classic. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
