Description

“I haven’t the slightest idea when ‘The Squire Squander’ is to be produced—This year, next year sometime!”

British novelist, playwright, and journalist who produced popular detective and suspense stories and was in his time "the king" of the modern thriller. ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 3.5, Clarence Gates letterhead, no date. Letter to Mr. Bellamy. In full: “I haven’t the slightest idea when ‘The Squire Squander’ is to be produced—This year, next year sometime! Gerald [most likely manager Gerald du Maurier] does most of the costing—I find it more restful not to oppose the suggestions of the management! At the same time if your review is offered to me I shall say yes.” A bisecting vertical fold, small pencil notation at bottom, some light adhesive remnants to front, and some scattered light soiling, otherwise fine condition.
