Description

“I never hated to refuse any one so badly in my life as I did you but I was so worn out I felt I could not add to my burdens”

Evangelist, and former baseball player, who preached a fundamentalist theology in a highly flamboyant style. ALS signed “W. A. Sunday,” two pages, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, no date. Letter to a gentleman named Shaw offering an apology. In full: “I knew you had nothing to do with that report so don’t you worry. I never hated to refuse any one so badly in my life as I did you but I was so worn out I felt I could not add to my burdens by the trip. I will get even with you some time then you will forget the disappointment.” Accompanied by a 1955 ALS from Sunday’s wife on a government postcard. In fine condition, with a staple to top left corner.

Over the course of his career, Sunday probably conducted about 20,000 sermons and preached to more than one hundred million people face-to-face, and for the most part without the benefit of a microphone. It’s no wonder that he admits to feeling worn out in this letter. Over time, he and his wife admitted having been pushed to their emotional limits by continuing a long-distance relationship while his wife cared for their four children. The burden was eased somewhat when Nell Sunday became her husband’s manager and a nanny was hired to care for the children. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
