Joseph Dana Webster

Engineer and soldier most noted for administrative services during the American Civil War where he served as chief of staff to both Grant and Sherman. Handwritten endorsement, in pencil, signed “J. D. Webster,” U. S. Military telegraph to Brigadier General Webster from Brigadier General Thomas William Sweeny, 5.25 x 8.5, written in a clerical hand, dated October 29, 1863, from LaGrange reads, "When will trains be sent to move the troops & government property at this place which are as follows 2 Regts Infy eight hundred (800) pioneer corps one hundred fifty (150) division & Brigade Head Quarters eighteen (18)…camp & garrison equipage & Hospital stores. Resy, F W Sweeny, Brig Gen.” Endorsed on the reverse, “Maj. Gen. Hurlbut / I have had no instructions about this - Resp J. D. Webster.” In very good condition, with bisecting vertical fold, lightly through first initial of signature, scattered light toning, creasing, and soiling, and endorsement a shade light.
