In full [his spellings and punctuation retained]: “I hope you received my last letter of Dec. 27. As I than said we shall recive the exit visas to leave the country in march or early April. Right now what we need is money for the tickets maybe you can try the Red Cross in Vernon about that they should notify the American Embassy, Moscow, for information. We received your package of magazines on about New Years thanks a lot for them, Today I also received a post card from you. The weather is very cold and wet here, how is it in Texas. Marina is feeling fine and sends her love. Did you recive the tea and candy from us? If so how did you like it. That’s all for now. Write soon.” This letter was an official exhibit (No. 180) in the Warren Commission investigation into JFK’s assassination and, like most of the exhibits, is protectively soft-laminated. In fine condition, laminated as described, with a mild shade of toning and a few light creases.
In view of a prior, intense commitment to the Soviet Union, a great change must have occurred in Oswald's life to induce him to return to the United States. Perhaps it was his disillusionment with Soviet society, or simply the fact that his wife, Marina, was 8 months pregnant. Although unlikely, maybe it was simply the regret of an impulsive nature. After all, JFK’s assassin was not yet 20 years old when he went to the Soviet Union and not yet 23 when he returned to the US. Whatever the reason, it’s clear here that he is frustrated by delays and bureaucratic red tape, and simply wants out of the country, going so far as to suggest that his mother contact the Red Cross for assistance. On June 1, 1961, after a year of paperwork, Oswald, his wife, and their child left the Soviet Union to return to America—and Oswald’s date with infamy.
