Description

Lee organizes his Gung Fu schools with his protégé, and shares the wealth

ALS signed “Bruce,” one page, 8.5 x 11, no date. Letter to Taky Kimura, his prize student and eventually one of only three Lee-certified instructors of Jeet Kune Do. In full: “The accompanying sheets are promotional ideas of Gung Fu. They are from my note book and I’m sure when put into a set formula, it will be effective. Let me know how your plans are of the organization of schools and we’ll discuss it. I, myself, want you to have shares of it. Write and let me know what your planning & thinking is.” In fine condition, with a bit of mild edge toning as well as a few surface dings and wrinkles.

In rejecting many components of traditional martial arts and adopting a more inclusive, holistic approach, Lee developed a system he originally called “Jun Fan Gung Fu,” a name that incorporated the Chinese form of his own name, Lee Jun Fan. Lee summed up the underlying philosophy of his style, later renamed Jeet Kun Do (“The Way of the Intercepting Fist”), as “simply the direct expression of one’s feelings with the minimum of movements and energy.” Lee operated a number of schools based on his methods from 1967 until 1971, though he permitted his students to carry on his teachings on a private basis. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
