You must not think because I used ‘glum & sombre’ that I was disparaging your work. It’s simply I can’t stand the ‘sad gorilla’ aspect of myself which I often see in photos. Of the hundreds of photos people have taken of me there are only about a half-dozen I really like…In general photography leaves me cold…I hung out with advertising men, salesmen, and artists both, when in my twenties—and became thoroughly disgusted with everything which they found exciting…One gets so damn tired of their enthusiasm, optimism, hyperbole, etc. The result, we who look and listen become blind and deaf…I say ‘what a horrendous use of good energy! What stultification of man’s creative powers!
